Tom Walsh (NZL) made an excellent 21.97m entry, but Ryan Crouser (USA) immediately replied by taking the lead with 22.18m. Tomas Stanek (CZE) threw at 21.36m and David Storl (GER) at 21.17m. It was during his fourth attempt that Crouser ended the suspense by sealing his victory with a magnificent 22.39m.
19:25 | Javelin Throw Women | It Flies for Them!
Barbora Spotakova (CZE) enjoyed a superb start with 67.40m, the world's best performance of the season and record of the meet. She then floundered a bit and, surprisingly, was beaten by Sara Kolak (CRO) who thew her javelin at 68.43m in her last try. The Croatian beat her national record and set the world's best performance of 2017. Ranking #3 and 4, Australian Kathryn Mitchell and Kelsey-Lee Roberts also improved their personal best with 66.12 and 64.06m.
19:30 | Long Jump Women | Ivana Spanovic Wins an Exciting Contest
This contest near the northern tribune progressively increased in intensity. In the lead after her first two jumps of 6.63m, Ivana Spanovic (SRB) was surpassed by only one-centimeter by Darya Klishina (RUS) in her third attempt, and then by Tianna Bartoletta (USA) who jumped 6.65m on her fourth attempt. However, the Serb Spanovic clearly surpassed her competitors with a fourth jump of 6.79m. Finally, Shakeela Saunders (USA) took the second place with 6.68m.
20:03 | 400m Hurdles Women | Lea Sprunger Finished Second in 54 "29
Ashley Spencer (USA) led with a very nice tempo to win in 53 "90. Just behind, Lea Sprunger (SUI) delivered a splendid race, culminating in a new personal record in 54" 29, only four hundredths of a second behind Anita Protti's Swiss record. In third place, Edith Doyle (GBR) established her best performance of the season in 54"36 and pushed back the assaults of Sara Petersen (DEN) and Zuzana Hejnova, clocking 54"49 and 54"69.
20:10 | Pole Vault Men | A little Closer to the Stars
Stratospheric competition for a trio of great champions. In amazing shape, Sam Kendricks (USA) cleared 5.93 m, new record of the meeting. He was imitated by Pavel Wojciechowski (POL) who also passed this bar at 5.93 m to set a new national record for Poland. Renaud Lavillenie (FRA) - the darling of the Pontaise – was also brilliant in third with 5.87m.
20:13 | 1500m Men | Aman Wote Resists to the Returning Kenyans
The race really started at the 900m mark. Aman Wote (ETH) enjoyed a subsantial lead at the bell and managed to hold it up until 200m from the finish. Despite the Kenyans' kick from behind, Wote was able to resist until the line and secured the win in 3'32"20 in front of Charles Simotwo (KEN) who ran in 3'32"59 and Silas Kiplagat (KEN) in 3'32"96.
20:23 | 100m Hurdles Women | Tight Race Won by Kristi Nelvis
In the absence of Kendra Harrison, the race remained more open and undecided than ever. It was eventually Kristi Castlin (USA) who won in 12"53, just ahead of Sharika Nelvis (USA) in 12"57 and Christina Manning (USA) in 12"58 (PB).
20:33 | 1 Mile Women | Genzebe Dibaba Alone in the World
Genzebe Dibaba's (ETH) attempt at the world record failed, but it was a fabulous race. The public, in trance, carried the Ethiopian all the way into her epic final stretch. Her time, 4'16"05, is of course the best performance of the year.
20:44 | 200m Women | Marie-Josée Ta Lou Close Behind Daphne Schippers
Daphne Schippers (NED) won the 200m in 22"10, her best time of the season, but it was close as Marie-Josée Ta Lou (CIV) was on fire tonight. She hung on well and beat her national record in 22"16. Kyra Jefferson (USA) completed the podium in 22"34. On the Swiss side, Mujinga Kumbundji finished sixth with her best time of the season in 22"82, while Sarah Atcho delivered the second best time of her career in 23"04.
20:45 | High Jump Women | Marija Lasitskene Tries the World Record
Five athletes jumped 1.93m, but only one of them would be able to go higher, and in fact much higher. Marija Lasitskene managed to pass 1.96m on her second attempt, then 2.01m on the first try and finally 2.06m after one miss. With the world's best performance of the year and the Diamond League record in the pocket, Lasitskene then asked for a bar at 2.10m, to edge the world record of the Bulgarian jumper Stefka Kostadinova. She was unsuccessful, but the level reached by the Russian is absolutely wonderful.
20:54 | 400m Hurdles Men | Victory in the Last Meters for Kariem Hussein
Byron Robinson (USA) seeemed to be the strongest in this race, but the tremendous return of Kariem Hussein (SUI) changed the game. The 2014 European champion finally got a win in 48"79, his best time of the season, and left behind Robinson in 48"88, Rasmus Mägi (EST) in 48"94 and Bershawn Jackson (USA) in 49"04. Placed in lane #1, the resident of Lausanne Alain-Hervé Mfomkpa was able to follow the leaders at a respectable distance; he finished in 51"45.
20:55 | Triple Jump Men | Pedro Pablo Pichardo ahead of the Americans!
We could expect the Americans Christian Taylor and Will Claye to dominate the triple jump contest. However, Pedro Pablo Pichardo (CUB) did not agree with that. He won on his last attempt by performing his best triple jump of the year with 17.60m. Christian Taylor finished second with 17.49m and Will Claye was third with 17.12m.
21:04 | 5000m Men | Two Ethiopians under Thirteen Minutes
As expected the Kenyans dictated the pace during the first nine laps. Joshua Cheptegei (UGA) then took the lead at the 4000m mark, yet not for long as the Ethiopians too wanted the victory. Muktar Edris (ETH) won in 12'55"23, the world's best performance of the year, ahead of his compatriot Selemon Barega (ETH) in 12'55"58 and the Ugandan Cheptegei in 12'59"83. Also entered in this fast 5000m, Julien Wanders (SUI) unfortunately had to let the field go and gave up after 3800m.
21:20 | 100m Men | Justin Gatlin in Front of Ben Youssef Meite
Justin Gatlin (USA) likes the public of Lausanne and he treated them well by securing a decisive victory on the road towards the World Championships in London. With a time of 9"96, he beat Ben Youssouf Meité (CIV) by two hundredths and Akani Simbine (RSA) by three hundredths of a second. Seventh in this race, Alex Wilson (SUI) ran a solid 10"17.
21:30 | 800m Women | Francine Niyonsaba without Sharing
After a quick first lap in 56"5, Francine Niyonsaba (BDI) took the lead at the 550m mark and maintained her position until the finish line. She wins the race in the very good time of 1'56"82 ahead of Charlene Lipsey (USA) in 1'57"33 and Eunice Jepkoesch Sum (KEN) in 1'57"78. Tenth, Selina Büchel (SUI) may not have had the expected finish, but she still delivered another time under two minutes in 1'59"77.
21:40 | 400m Men | Wayde Van Niekerk Imperial
The race was lead by Isaac Makwala (BOT) until the 300m mark. But the true boss of the race was Wayde Van Niekerk (RSA). His last stretch was imperial and irresistible. He won in 43"62, the world's best performance of the year and the Diamond League record. What would have happened if the South African prodigy had not slowed down before the end? Baboloki Thebe (BOT) finished second with a new personal record of 44"02 and Makwala was third in 44"08.
21:50 | 4x100m Relay Women | Victory of the Swiss Relay and National Record of 42"52!
Fireworks before the end of the meeting! Ajla Del Ponte (US Ascona) and Sarah Atcho (Lausanne-Sports)perfectly launched the race of the Swiss team. After the second exchange, Mujinga Kambundji (ST Bern) lead and passed the baton to Salomé Kora (LC Brühl St.Gallen), who easily contained her opponents and concluded a real masterpiece in 42"52, a Swiss record by 35 hundredths. The grandstand, standing during Salome’ final stretch, got excited like never before. In the shadow of this amazing performance, the Swiss juniors also had an amazing race. Judith Goll (BTV Chur), Lynn Mantingh (LC Zurich) Veronica Vancardo (TSV Düdingen) and Cynthia Reinle (TV Unterseen) beat the Swiss U20 record by 31 hundredths with a time of 44"69.
