After their outstanding seasons both outdoor and indoor, Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Femke Bol were named European Athletes of the Year. The Norwegian, world champion in the 5000m and silver medalist in the 1500m, set a new Athletissima meeting record in the 1500m with a time of 3:28.72. He also won the Diamond League in the mile and 3000m.
As for the Dutchwoman, she continues on the golden path she began at the European Championships in Munich in 2022, establishing herself as the master of the 400m hurdles (world champion this year in Budapest and winner of the Diamond League). This year at Athletissima, she broke the meeting record for the second year running (52.95 in 2022 and 52.76 this year!).
Among the rising stars, Serbia's Angelina Topić, European junior champion, reached 1.94m this year in the high jump at the Lausanne City Event, just 3 centimetres short of her personal best, at just 18 years old! Italy's Mattia Furlani, European junior champion 2023 with 8.23m, finished 7th in the long jump at Athletissima, with a best jump of 7.73m in a difficult competition marked by a tough headwind.
European athletics are in top form, and the 2024 season promises to be a colorful one! Athletissima will be the first meeting after the Paris Olympic Games, so we can expect athletes at the peak of their form and exceptional performances. See you on Thursday, August 22, 2024 at the Pontaise Olympic Stadium for the 49th edition!
