Swiss stars are in top form, just 15 days ahead of the European Indoor Championships in Apeldoorn (NL). The favourites shone at the Swiss Indoor Championships in St. Gallen, starting with Mujinga Kambundji, who clocked the second-fastest time in the world this winter over 60m (7.03s).
The Athletissima ambassador claimed her 31st national title, 16 years after her first, across all distances. She is perfectly poised to add to her medal collection in Apeldoorn and perhaps again at the World Indoor Championships in Nanjing (China) at the end of March.
This very competitive 60m final also saw Emma Van Camp (Lausanne-Sports) take the silver and meet the qualification standard for the Europeans, with a time of 7.18s, setting a new U23 national record.
In the 60m hurdles, Ditaji Kambundji came within 0.02s of her freshly set Swiss record, finishing in 7.82s. She ranks as the second-best European performer of the winter and sixth worldwide. Following closely, heptathlete Annik Kälin clocked an impressive personal best of 7.92s, just a day after her victory in the long jump (6.68m) and her appearance in the 60m final.
Another versatile champion, Simon Ehammer, stayed true to his reputation by winning the long jump with a mark of 8.10m and finishing second in the 60m hurdles with 7.71s. In the latter event, Jason Joseph claimed a stunning victory in 7.45s. The Basel athlete, back at his best, posted the second-fastest European time of the winter.
Angelica Moser reinforced her strong medal prospects for Apeldoorn and Nanjing by winning the pole vault with a height of 4.72m. She narrowly missed clearing 4.81m, just shy of Nicole Büchler’s Swiss record. Finally, Audrey Werro delivered a commanding performance in a highly competitive 800m, winning in 2’01’13.
